How to protect your home from freezing temperatures
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — We’re about to see well-below-freezing temperatures coming soon, so it’s important to know how to prepare your house for when these temperatures hit.
“Every single year I’d say we probably have, on our coldest day, 250 to 300 calls in a single day,” said Electrical Service Manager Nate Isaacs.
Isaacs says power outages are one of the most common calls they receive during the winter so one thing he suggests is…
“Make sure you have a green light on your generator and it’s ready to turn on whenever power goes out.”
Power outages are not the only problem that follows the cold weather. Busted pipes in homes and establishments can cost a lot but are easy to avoid.
“We see bursted pipes when we see some of that negative temperature that we see coming this weekend,” Isaacs added.
Temperatures are about to hit as low as 10 degrees which can cause household hazards like busted pipes and frozen exterior walls.
There are many factors to consider when analyzing how to prepare your home for the winter.
One important tip is allowing cold water to drip from your faucets to prevent pipes from bursting.
You can also open your cabinets and keep your home at a temperature above 55 degrees to help keep those pipes warm.
Adding insulation to areas that are exposed to the cold will also help prevent damage.
Lastly, make sure those spigots and outdoor hoses are covered.
