Our tranquil mid-December weather pattern continues
Expect cold mornings and pleasant afternoons across the area the rest of the week
Despite a weak boundary dropping through the Ohio Valley early Wednesday bringing slightly cooler air to the region, it was another delightful December day across Central and Eastern Kentucky. With more sunshine after a few morning clouds and a light northeast wind, afternoon highs reached upper 40s and low 50s! This quiet weather pattern we’ve enjoyed so far this week will continue for the next few days.
As high pressure sits overhead into the late week we’ll start on the cold side with lows dipping into the mid to upper 20s before we start to see temperatures moderate nicely into the afternoon with highs climbing back into the low 50s Thursday.
Expect more of the same and then some for Friday and to begin the weekend on Saturday. The area of high pressure will drift eastward allowing a southwest flow to pick up across the commonwealth. This combined with plenty of sunshine should push afternoon highs back into the mid-50s, which is nearly 10 degrees above average for this time of the year. We should see a little more in the way of clouds on Saturday as our next potential rain chance draws a little closer.
The model data continues to jump back and forth on the rain potential for Sunday. It’s really a question of whether some energy in the southern stream joins up with a clipper system diving in from the northwest, or matches up with a low coming out of the Gulf of Mexico. If the wave phases with the clipper we’ll see a better chance of showers on Sunday and right now that’s what the data is suggesting. Just keep the rain gear handy for Sunday and we’ll keep an eye on it.
