A nice Veterans Day weekend here in the commonwealth
With high pressure building in, temperatures will be right around average for early November
Even though it wasn’t much we did some some very beneficial rain across mainly Southern and Southeastern Kentucky early Friday, which was the area that needed it the most given the on-going forest fire situation there. Most spots picked up a quarter to a half inch of rain and while this should give firefighters some help, we need more and it may be a bit before we see another chance. The rain ended quickly allowing for some sunshine to return through Friday afternoon with afternoon highs topping out in the mid to upper 50s.
Heading into the weekend, high pressure will slowly drift southward through the Ohio Valley setting us up for a pleasantly cool Veterans Day. It will be quite cold to start with morning temperatures in the low to mid-30s but with lots of sunshine and a light northeast wind, it should be a delightful afternoon as we honor our veterans and thank them for their service to our country. Afternoon highs should recover into the mid-50s, which is just below average for this time in November. Conditions look pretty ideal as the Kentucky finish off the 2023 home football schedule on Senior Day with Kentucky taking on Alabama at Noon over at Kroger Field. Go Cats!
Dry and tranquil weather will persists to finish out the weekend and continue through much of next week. The trough to our south that we thought might bring a few sprinkles to our southern counties early Sunday should stay far enough to the south for conditions to remain quiet through the weekend. Sunday should be another day with highs in the mid to upper 50s before we finally jump back into the low 60s on Monday as our winds shift to the southeast.
It appears we’ll play the waiting game on our next chance of rain until late next week as a weak wave creeping in from the southwest may give us an isolated shower chance Thursday before a cold front makes a run through the Ohio Valley by next Friday. It’s still a week out but at least we are seeing some signs of another rain chance given the on-going drought. 40% of the commonwealth including much of Central and Eastern Kentucky remains in a “Moderate Drought” so we need a good soaker to her alleviate that deficit. Have a great weekend!
