Record warmth on the table for Wednesday
A few spots may press the 80 degree mark for an afternoon high, which is pretty unusual in November
Despite some cloudiness across Central and Eastern Kentucky thanks to a frontal boundary just to our north, it turned out to be a decent Election Day around the area. We actually saw a few peaks of sunshine through the afternoon and there will be more on the way for the mid-week. The big story will be the unseasonably mild to even warm temperatures continuing into the mid-week. Afternoon highs reached the mid to upper 70s and we should do even better on Wednesday.
Wednesday looks to be the pick day of the week as the commonwealth is in the prime spot for a record setting day. With a strong southwest wind working with sunshine in place, afternoon highs should surge in the upper 70s with the Lexington metro area right around the 80 degree mark. The record high temperature on Wednesday here in Lexington is 77 degrees set back in 2020 and we should be able to best that given the set-up. If we reach that, it will be close to the latest 80 degree high temperature ever recorded here in Lexington with November 11, 1959 taking top honors. This would be only the 12th time we’ve seen an 80 degree high temperature here in Lexington in the moth of November.
Of course the warm air won’t last long as a cold front drops into the state on Thursday, Expect occasional rain as temperatures begin to drop off into the mid to upper 60s. We may see a bit of a break in the rain for a time Thursday night but a secondary wave of energy will slide by to the south on Friday keeping the rain chances firmly in place for Southern and Southeastern Kentucky. This is a good thing considering the on-going forest fire situation in the southeast mountains with several forest fires on-going this week. That part of the state could see more than 1″ of widespread rain.
Expect a cooler but pleasant weekend for early November as we dry out and high pressure settles into the Ohio Valley. Temperatures will be right around average for this time of the year with highs in the mid to upper 50s through the weekend. The nice weather is welcome news for Senior Day out at Kroger Field as Kentucky takes on Alabama in the final home game of 2023. It will be a bit cool for tailgating in the morning but temperatures should be nice by kickoff into the low 50s. At this point it looks like a lovely afternoon with highs in the upper 50s by the end of the afternoon.
