College and Community in Berea plan response to harassment incidents

BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) — After a growing number of incidents involving the Confederate flag and the harassment of LGBT+ and students of color, Berea College announced plans to demonstrate the values of their College and community.

On November 23, between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., student groups, faculty, and groups from the wider Berea community plan to gather in front of the President’s Home. Participants of this peaceful display will have signs and banners that convey the College’s motto and its inclusive message: “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.”

Berea College said that the demonstration is meant to show that while they will be respecting the constitutionally respected rights of others – “even if it involves abhorrent or disagreeable expressions of speech” – people are not obligated to suffer threats, intimidation, or violations of civil rights.
