YMCA summer camp focuses on kids being kids, outdoor adventures

VERSAILLES, Ky. (WTVQ) – When it comes to summer camp, the YMCA of Central Kentucky wants kids to get back to the basics. At Bar Y in Versailles, it’s all about the outdoor adventures.

Kaitlyn Ratterman is the director at Bar Y. The camp has been at their Versailles location for more than 30 years.

“It’s about five acres of land which is really nice. We’re all spread out so it gives us a chance to have the kids really separated from each other in their own groups but close enough to where I know where they’re located,” said Ratterman.

With roughly 100 kids registered, every week, it’s the perfect place for outdoor activities.

“We have things like crawdad fishing, we have a low ropes course, we have different mastery of skills that they get to learn like archery and basketball and soccer. So that’s what’s really unique about our camp and why we love it,” explained Ratterman.

Something most parents will probably love – how worn out their kids are at the end of the day.

Ratterman says the day includes, “Lots of hands-on activities, very physical, always doing stuff. And it’s a great alternative to whenever you have kids sitting at home on iPads or watching tv. It gives them a chance to come out and play around and play like we used to play back in the day.”

Those who work at the camp seem to agree the tunnel slide is their favorite activity on the property.

“I’ve gone down it a few times. It’s a lot of fun,” said Ratterman.

The tunnel slide spans 100 feet. Kids take turns going through the downhill tunnel on a sled. There’s usually a line which makes it the most popular activity with the kids as well.

“The great thing about it is that they get in, go all the way down and then they have to walk all the way back up,” laughed Ratterman.

Bar Y is one of several camps the YMCA of Central Kentucky offers during the summer. They book week-to-week to help with scheduling. Registration continues all summer. You can find more information HERE.
