Y-Readers Program to visit Millcreek Elementary
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Y’s Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program will be coming to Millcreek Elementary in Lexington on July 26.
The program helps elementary students reading below grade level. The pilot program focuses on phonics, writing and reading to boost literacy skills, with enrichment activities to support physical and social emotional growth.
Targeted students in first and second grade receive a free six-week program taught by certified teachers and school staff. They receive individualized instruction as well as enrichment through art, music and physical activity. Healthy meals also are provided. Students are nominated for the program by their teachers and their school.
Families are encouraged to read together for 30 minutes each evening to reinforce the day’s progress. Students also maintain a reading log, which helps them solidify their writing skills and keep track of their progress.
The program was offered at three Fayette County Schools in 2015 – Cardinal Valley, James Lane Allen and Millcreek Elementary. Students were tested at weeks one and six and, overall 88 percent showed improvements in their reading skills.
