Woman turns 100, requests cards, gets much more

STEARNS, Ky. (WTVQ) – A woman in Stearns turned 100 years old on Monday. Instead of a traditional birthday party, we reported Friday, she asked for cards.

Lola Smith turned 100 years old on Monday, May 11. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her daughter Rose Griffis posted on Facebook they couldn’t celebrate in the way they hoped with a large gathering. Instead, the local community came up with a creative way to help Lola celebrate.

Sunday, Rose shared a video saying thank you to, “our local fire dept for your visit to my sweet Momma on Mothers day and singing happy birthday.”

In the video, vehicle after vehicle is seen driving by Lola. Passengers waved, held signs and honked from a safe social distance.

Rose thanked everyone on Facebook for the generous act, “I know if it were possible she would hug each of you.”
