Woman apologizes at sentencing in deadly DUI case

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A woman who killed a man in a drunk driving crash in Lexington last year apologized to the victim’s family in court Thursday during her sentencing.

Alexandria Rankin was sentenced to seven-years in prison for the DUI crash that killed 23-year old Robert Hatler in November 2016.

She was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence.

The accident happened off Athens-Boonesboro Road.

Hatler’s family and friends were in the courtroom for the sentencing.  They stood, some holding pictures of Hatler, as Rankin read her emotional statement.

“I don’t feel as if I have a right to address your family and nothing I say will make this better, but please know how truly sorry I am for Robert’s death,” Rankin said.

Rankin also said in court that before the deadly crash, she had been out drinking with friends and that she only intended to have a few drinks, but admitted she had one too many and doesn’t even remember how the wreck happened.
