Wolfe County devastated by flood water; family’s home destroyed

WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – There are stories that are heartbreaking and heartwarming coming out of Wolfe County, which was devastated by flooding Thursday.

The water destroyed Ruby Peyton’s home.

“It was terrible,” Peyton said. “My animals drowned. 20 years of everything you own – gone.”

Peyton said she was on her way home when it started raining so hard that she could barely see. When she finally made it home, she saw her neighbors scrambling to make it to the road, to escape the flood.

“But my husband works second shift at Toyota and I knew he was asleep, and my son, so when I turned the curve, I just thought that they wouldn’t be alive,” Peyton said.

Thankfully, they got up in time to fight against the chest-deep water.

Now, after losing several pets, a car and everything they own inside the home, Peyton is struggling to figure out what’s next.

About a mile down the road, Bethany Christian School is still deciding if it’s going to open on schedule Monday.

“We’d been planning for Open House, but we had to open the doors instead and let water flow through,” Superintendent Candy Burnette said.

However, after an outpouring of support, Burnette said it might be possible.

“We was over the other day, worked in the bathroom for them,” Iran Parks, better known as ‘Porky,’ said. He was volunteering at the school Thursday. “We’re scrubbing the gymnasium right now.”

“They were sitting in our parking lot waiting to see if it was going to go down so we can get the debris off that bridge,” Burnette said of the volunteers and local government officials. “I can’t say enough about them. They really stepped up and we appreciate it very, very much.”

Bethany Christian is known for its long history of helping the community, and Burnette plans to help people like Peyton get back on their feet.

“Everybody’s one big family around here,” Peyton said. “We just try to help out each other – try to encourage each other.”
