Williamsburg PD: Suspect tried to run down officers with pickup truck

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – Williamsburg police say they opened fire on a suspect when he tried to run two officers down with his pickup truck in Williamsburg on Wednesday.

24-year-old Brandon J. Stinnett has been charged with attempted murder, attempted murder of a police officer, unlawful imprisonment, fleeing and evading police, and other violations.

Officers say they were investigating a theft, when they tried to pull Stinnett over, but say instead of stopping, he took off.  Police say they pursued Stinnett for several miles, hitting speeds as high as 80 mph.  During the pursuit, police say Stinnett nearly hit a Kentucky State Police trooper’s car.

Later, police say Stinnett aimed his truck directly at a police chief and a detective, both of whom had to run from their car for fear of being hit.  It was then that Chief Wayne Bird fired his gun at Stinnett.  No one was hit by the shot.

Stinnett eventually lost control and wrecked his truck, injuring a woman passenger.  She was taken to Baptist Health Corbin.  No word on her condition, or relationship to Stinnett.

Per Williamsburg Police Department policy, Kentucky State Police are investigating the Chiefs use of a firearm in the incident.

Stinnett was taken to the Whitley County Detention Center.
