West jessamine honors Abby Dobie with new tree

Nicholasville, Ky. (WTVQ)– It’s a special day, remembering West Jessamine High School teacher Abby Dobie, who tragically lost her life in august in a car accident.

Her peers finding a way to honor her on her birthday on Tuesday.

“We wanted to do something that would be long lasting for Abby and to recognize her,” said West Jessamine Principal Brady Thornton. “And so planting this tree and this memorial stone and establishing this scholarship, we thought were ways that would do that.”

After deciding to plant a tree Thornton reached out to Dobie’s husband.

“I asked him if there was anything that she liked and he told me that hydrangea’s were special to her. She liked hydrangea flowers and that’s why we decided to do a hydrangea tree for this.”

Thornton spoke with ABC 36 on what made today to special.

“It was special that the family wanted to take the time to do that. Because I know this being her birthday, it’s not an easy day for them. And having them be apart of it, in addition to Abby’s west high family here, was a special moment.”

The school has even named a scholarship after Abby.

“Our goal is to raise $5,000, so that we can give a $500 scholarship a year to a senior for the next ten years. In Abby’s honor and so that we can continue to bless our students the way that she’s blessed us.”

Thornton says that even though Dobie is gone, she will never be forgotten.
