Welfare check turns into house fire in Garrard Co.

GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- Garrard County Police say they went to a home in reference to a welfare check when they rescued a lady in the home who had barricaded herself, shot at officers, and set the bedroom on fire.

Police say that upon arrival, they entered the home and found the lady inside, barricaded in the bedroom, shooting a shotgun through the door. Officers say they then saw heavy smoke coming from the room and kicked the bedroom door in. The woman was lying on a burning mattress and officers dragged her down the stairs.

The lady was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. An officer suffered minor burns during the rescue.
