Warming up on Friday ahead of weekend storms

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Friday! After a beautiful start to the day, we will be tracking warmer temperatures later this afternoon. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 80s and low 90s for most of the region. Dewpoints will be climbing as well, leading to increased humidity during the second half of the day. After starting the day with mostly sunny skies, some cloud cover will return later in the day. There is also the chance of a pop-up shower or storm, but most areas will remain dry. There won’t be much of a break overnight temperature-wise. Overnight lows will only be falling into the mid-70s for most of the area.
This heat and humidity will lead to more storm chances Saturday afternoon and evening. There is a low-end severe threat for Saturday through Saturday night as well. The Storm Prediction Center is highlighting all of Kentucky for a Level 1 Severe Risk. Damaging wind gusts and locally heavy downpours will be the primary concerns for us. Isolated large hail can’t be ruled out either. If you’re camping over the weekend, make sure you are staying weather aware and make sure you have a sturdy structure to get to if severe weather strikes near you.
The storms will stick around into the first half of the day on Sunday before another cold front sweeps through Sunday night. This passing front will lead to a BEAUTIFUL start to the month of July. Afternoon highs will only reach the upper 70s and low 80s for most areas. Nothing to complain about there! That pleasant feel is short lived once again. Hot and humid conditions return by the middle of next week. This will likely lead to more storm chances Wednesday into your 4th of July holiday on Thursday.
