Warm, breezy stretch continues before storms move in late Thursday

Wednesday stays warm and breezy

Wednesday starts off mild across the Bluegrass, with early morning temperatures already sitting in the upper 60s and low 70s. High clouds continue to stream overhead, but no significant weather is expected through the morning hours.

By the afternoon, the pattern remains very similar to the past few days. A steady southwest breeze, with gusts reaching 20 to 30 mph, helps push temperatures back into the low to mid 80s. That puts the region well above normal for mid-April.

Most of the storm activity stays well to the north, closer to the Ohio River and beyond, so central and eastern Kentucky remain largely dry. There is only a very small chance of a stray storm sneaking into far northern areas, but for most, it is another quiet and warm day.

Mild night with changes approaching

Wednesday night stays unusually mild, with temperatures slowly falling through the 70s and settling into the 60s by Thursday morning. Winds remain light out of the south to southwest, keeping the air from cooling off much.

Clouds will gradually increase overnight as the next weather system approaches from the west. Showers and storms are expected to develop upstream and inch closer to the region late at night, though most areas likely stay dry until closer to daybreak.

Storm chances increase Thursday

Thursday brings the next real opportunity for rain across central and eastern Kentucky. Showers may begin to move in during the morning, but they will likely be weakening as they arrive.

The bigger focus shifts to the afternoon and evening, when conditions could become more favorable for stronger storms to develop. How much sunshine breaks through earlier in the day will play a big role in how intense those storms can become.

If enough instability builds, a few storms could turn strong, especially late in the day. Gusty to damaging winds look like the main concern, with the potential for some hail in stronger cells. The most active window appears to be from late afternoon into the evening hours.

Warm pattern holds into the weekend

Even with Thursday’s storms, the overall warm pattern does not go anywhere. Friday brings another return to dry conditions for most, along with temperatures climbing back into the 80s.

By Saturday, another system approaches, bringing increasing clouds and another round of showers and storms. Once again, strong winds would be the main concern if storms intensify.

Cooler air follows the weekend front

A noticeable shift arrives behind Saturday’s cold front. Temperatures drop quickly, with Sunday morning starting off in the 40s and much cooler air settling in.

By the end of the weekend and into early next week, highs fall back closer to seasonal levels, bringing a break from the early summer warmth that has dominated much of the week.
