Volunteers stuff 5,600 backpacks for YMCA back-to-school rallies

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Back-to-school shopping is expensive, and not always easy for every family to afford.

Thursday morning, volunteers of all ages met to stuff 5,600 backpacks at Setzer Properties.

The backpacks will be distributed on Saturday to schools around Fayette County during the YMCA’s Back-to-School rallies. Families were able to pre-register for a backpack, which include a mask and school supplies like pencils, binders, and appropriate paper for each grade level. They can be picked up via drive-through.

The backpack stuffing is spearheaded by the YMCA and in partnership with Fayette County Schools.

“It’s a great thing to see when these children come up and get their backpacks and they’re so excited. It’s a great service, a great partnership, and it really helps these kids get off to a faster start at school,” said YMCA of Central Kentucky President and CEO Paula Anderson.

Distribution locations will be open from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Distribution locations are:

Booker T. Washington Elementary, Cardinal Valley Elementary, Coventry Oak Elementary, Dixie Elementary, Gainesway Community Center, Shiloh Baptist Church, Woodhill Community Center, Valvoline (3475 Blazer Parkway), and Winburn Middle School.
