Volunteers needed: River cleanup

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — The City of Lexington invites you to volunteer in the River Sweep, on June 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m

Authorities say volunteers will receive a free breakfast and lunch, a t-shirt and a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses. River Sweep says volunteers will be collecting trash and litter along the 12 miles of river that touches Fayette County.

The River Sweep will extend from the Clays Ferry Boat Dock to the Valley View Ferry this year, and volunteers are instructed by the City to gather at Clays Ferry Boat Dock off Ky 25 between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. to get ready.

(if you are using a GPS to get there, River Sweep says 9079 Old Richmond Road, Lexington will get you to the area)

If you decide to help out your local environment and community, volunteers are advised to wear closed-toed shoes, bring a life vest if you have one, and sturdy clothing. Trash bags, gloves, and some life vests will be reportedly provided on the scene.

River Sweep officials also ask that any volunteers who have boats could dedicate some of their time to help ferry the 80 or so volunteers that are estimated to come. If you do have a boat, and want information on how you can help, please contact jmyatt@lexingtonky.gov or (859) 425-2807

Volunteers can register online at www.riversweep2015.eventbrite.com or by calling 425-CALL.

Under-18 participants must have a release signed by their parent or guardian, which can be downloaded from the registration website. Some release forms will also be provided at the registration tent on the day of the River sweep.
