Volunteer firefighter, EKU student dies over the weekend
RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) — EKU and the White Hall Volunteer Fire Department are mourning the loss of one of their own.
27-year-old Mohannad Alrayes was killed early Sunday morning after a crash involving his motorcycle and a car.
Richmond Police say it responded to the intersection of Ty Lane and Four Mile Avenue just after 2 a.m. Sunday.
Police say Alrayes was taken by EMS to the UK Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Alrayes was a foreign exchange student from Saudi Arabia. He was studying Fire Arson Explosion Investigation at EKU.
Dr. William Hicks with EKU Fire and Safety says Alrayes took his studies very seriously and was finishing up school soon. He also says that once finished, Alrayes was going to head back to Saudi Arabia to help his country.
Assistant Chief Ricky Greenwell says him and Alrayes were good friends. He had been with the department since February of 2016.
“He was always great to be around. We attended fire school together and he was a great cook.” says Greenwell.
He says when he heard the news he couldn’t believe it. “I was in disbelief. I had just seen him Friday. Just thinking about it, it’s hard to believe.”
