Van hits community center building, threatens opening date

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Center Director at Kenwick Community Center isn’t sure the facility will be able to open on September 26th, after a van hit the building causing major damage to the entryway steps.

Director Stephanie Bowling says it happened just before 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.  She says that fortunately the center wasn’t open at the time, and that normally children would have been on those steps.

The only people at the building at the time were construction workers, none of whom were injured.

The center is scheduled to reopen on September 26th, having closed after the center’s summer camps.  Depending on the damage that may change.  Bowling says they will know more on Friday after assessing the damage.

The driver of the van was taken to the hospital.  No word on his condition.
