Urban County Council to vote on minimum wage hike

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council is expected to take a final vote on whether to raise the minimum wage at a meeting Thursday evening.

On the table is a wage hike from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour. The wage raises would take place over the course of three years.

Critics of increasing the minimum wage raise the possibility of job losses and point to the detrimental effects a hike could have on small businesses. Proponents, on the other hand, cite the difficulties low-income families face surviving at the current wage rate.

The proposal to raise the minimum wage didn’t get to council without difficulty. At an October 27 session, the proposal was added to the council’s budget after narrowly winning an 8-6 vote.
