UPDATE: Three bodies recovered from fire scene in Lee County

BEATTYVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – The bodies of three people were recovered from the scene of an apartment building fire in Lee County on Tuesday, according to State Police. Investigators say D-N-A tests will be used to try to determine the victim’s identities.

Investigators say the fire was reported around 4:30 a.m. in a building on Country Club Road that had been broken-up into several apartments. State Police a total of 13 people lived in the building. The ten survivors received temporary housing help from the American Red Cross.

Firefighters say there wasn’t a fire hydrant nearby, so thousands of gallons of water had to be trucked-in to fight the fire. Firefighters say they couldn’t get inside the building the fight the fire because the roof had collapsed. Investigators say they had to wait until the fire was out and the debris had cooled-off before they could begin searching for the three residents who were unaccounted for during the fire. Cadaver dogs were used in the search.

Investigators tell ABC 36 News that there weren’t any working smoke detectors in the apartment building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to State Police.
