UPDATE: Teen bicyclist dies from injuries after being hit by car

COLUMBIA, Ky. (WTVQ) – A recent honors graduate of Russell County High School has died from injuries suffered when he was hit by a car while riding a bike.

The Fayette County coroner says 18-year old Jessi Lowery died Tuesday, July 18, at UK Hospital in Lexington, 19-days after suffering a traumatic brain injury in the accident in Adair County.

Columbia Magazine reports that Lowery was riding a bicycle eastbound on KY 80, nine miles east of Columbia on June 30, when he was reportedly hit by a car driven by 80-year old Daniel Spieker, of Columbia.

The report says Spieker was cited for leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid and failing to produce a proof of auto insurance card.

The case remains under investigation by the Adair County Sheriff’s Office.

Funeral arrangements for Jessi Lowery are being handled by H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel in Jamestown, Kentucky.
