UPDATE: Suspect Shot By Police Had Criminal Record

Court documents showed that a suspect killed in a shootout with police had been previously arrested for domestic violence.

The Fayette County Coroner said Jesse Gibbons had been shot several times Saturday night before he died.

While the shootout happened in Richmond, investigators said the incident started when Lexington Police were called about a domestic disturbance on Featherston Drive.

Gibbons had driven off from the scene.

Police said Officer James Winter then tried to stop him on Buckhorn Drive.

According to investigators, Gibbons punched Winter in the face, wrestled a taser away from the officer and then drove off.

Police said Gibbons led law enforcement officers on a chase down I-75 toward Richmond.

Investigators said he crashed near EKU’s campus, then began shooting at officers.

Police said officers returned fire, and Gibbons was shot.

According to court records, Gibbons had been arrested for domestic violence in 2005.

Police said Officer Winter was out of the hospital but had not yet returned to work.
