UPDATE: Suspect in Chestnut St. shooting pleads not guilty
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man charged in a fatal Lexington shooting over the weekend appeared in a Lexington courtroom on Monday.
32-year-old Jesse Ray Nance, Jr. pleaded not guilty in the shooting of 48-year-old John Drain Moffett.
Moffett died from a gunshot wound near the intersection of Fifth and Chestnut on Saturday morning. Moffett was known in the community as a frequent volunteer with the Catholic Action Center.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for March 6 at 8:30 a.m.
The Catholic Action Center is planning a memorial service for Moffett around lunchtime on Thursday and hopes the community will attend.

Suspect in Chestnut Street shooting to be arraigned Monday
Lexington Police have arrested and charged 32-year-old Jesse Ray Nance, Jr. in connection to a fatal shooting.
The Fayette County Coroner says 48-year-old John Drain Moffett died from a gunshot wound Saturday morning near the intersection of Fifth and Chestnut.
Police say when they arrived on scene they found a woman shot in the leg outside the home then heard more gun shots inside where they found Moffett.
Those who live in the neighborhood say he was well known; a patron and volunteer with the nearby Catholic Action Center for more than a decade.
Ginny Ramsey from the Catholic Action Center said, “John was a kind and good man. He had a lot that he had lived through and a lot that he lived with but you know to sum up, when I think of john I smile.”
Funeral arrangements for Moffett have not been announced.
Nance has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.
