UPDATE: Superintendent finalists recommended to Fayette school board

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Fayette County schools announced that a pool of finalists for superintendent was recommended Wednesday night to the Fayette County School Board. The recommendations came during a closed session.

In a letter to the community, members of the Superintendent Screening Committee say, "We believe the applicants who expressed an interest in being the next Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent are incredibly strong."

The committee says it reached a consensus on a group of high quality candidates. Its letter says, "In all, we received 57 applications from coast to coast, reflecting diverse backgrounds and professional experiences."

While the screening committee has done its duty in recommending candidates to the school board, state law does not require the board to hire from among the recommended applicants.

FCPS hopes to have a new superintendent in place by July 1.
