UPDATE: Man accused of beating wife to death with bat to appear in court
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Lexington man who is accused of beating his estranged wife to death with a baseball bat is scheduled to appear in Fayette District Court Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
Police say Jose Antonio Rivera had an active Domestic Violence Order (DVO) out against him at the time of the reported assault.
The Fayette County coroner identified the victim as 38-year old Karina Gutierrez, who died of blunt force trauma to the head.
Her husband, 38-year-old Rivera, is accused of going to his wife’s apartment on Codell Drive late Sunday night and beating her with a bat and assaulting the couple’s young daughter, according to Lexington Police.
When officers arrived at the scene, they say they found Gutierrez outside of the apartment, suffering from a severe head injury. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.
Police say the daughter was not taken to the hospital.
Officers found Rivera a short time later at his home on Butternut Hill Court and arrested him without incident, according to investigators.
Rivera is charged with murder and assault.
He was lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center.
