Update: Florida Takes Early Lead In ‘Big Blue Slam’ Blood Drive

Florida took an early lead on the opening day of the annual blood drive competition between the Cats and the Gators.

Day one results:

  • Florida  365
  • Kentucky  339

Despite the day one numbers, the ‘Big Blue Slam’ had a memorable start on Monday at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington.

More than 130 blood donors kicked off the competition, but two of them had more on their mind that just saving a life.

Brian Lewis and Amanda Semler, both of Richmond, began planning a new life together when Lewis got down on one knee at center court and proposed to Semler.

The donors and Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) staff applauded as Lewis slipped the ring on Semler’s finger.  The couple then donated blood together.

The blood drive continues through Friday.

KBC donor centers will be open 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and there will be a number of blood drives on the University of Kentucky campus and at other locations throughout the region.

‘Big Blue Slam’ donors will receive a commemorative T-shirt and have a chance to win a package for two to the SEC Tournament in Atlanta – two tickets for the Thursday through Sunday sessions in the Georgia Dome and a three-night stay at the Westin Peachtree Plaza.

This is the sixth year of the competition with Kentucky leading the overall series against Florida 3-to-2.

The event comes at a good time since several important blood drives had to be canceled recently due to harsh winter weather, which impacted the blood supply.

Here are the KBC Donor Centers:

  • Andover Donor Center at 3130 Maple Leaf Drive in the Andover Shoppes in Lexington
