UPDATE: FBI joins search for accused Knox County killer

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – The FBI has joined the search for a man accused of gunning down a customer in a gas station during a robbery in Knox County, according to investigators.

Authorities say 25-year old Phillip Lee Lewis is considered armed and dangerous.  They say he has ties to Mississippi and Michigan.

Investigators say on January 16, 2019, Lewis held-up the A & B Quick Stop on U.S. 25E in the Gray community.  They say customer Gary Medlin tried to run out of the store to safety and was shot in the back and killed by Lewis, who was picked up by a driver in a getaway car after the shooting.

The 25-year old Medlin, from Barbourville, left behind a wife and two young sons, ages eight and two.  He was a heavy equipment operator working for Eldridge Excavating.

The suspect is described by investigators as being 6’1″ and 160-pounds.  He has tattoos on his right arm and chest and a scar on his head.

Anyone with information about Lewis’ whereabouts or this case, is asked to contact the FBI or any law enforcement agency.
