UPDATE: Fayette Co. Schools Appoint Interim Superintendent

The Fayette County Board of Education appointed an interim superintendent Thursday night.

Marlene Helm was chosen to temporarily take over the position when Tom Shelton leaves the school system.

And it’s a position Helm was familiar with.

She served as interim superintendent for three months back in 2004.

Fayette County Board of Education Chair John Price said, "Dr. Helm’s variety of experiences and familiarity with our school district make her uniquely suited to hit the ground running and tackle the challenges we face."

Helm’s resume included six years as Director of Elementary Curriculum in Scott County.

She then spent the next 14 years working for Fayette County Schools in administrative positions that included Personnel Supervisor, Director of State and Federal Programs, Director of Early Start (KERA Preschool) and Director of Elementary Schools.

Helm had most recently worked for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and as a Lead Evaluator for AdvancED.

She had also taught graduate teacher education courses at Georgetown College and the University of Kentucky.

Helm will officially take over as superintendent in January.

She’ll take the reins from Shelton, who has been hired as Executive Director of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.

The district said Helm’s contract extended through June 30, 2015.

The school board hoped to have a permanent superintendent ready to start July 1.
