UPDATE: Escapee captured in McCreary County

WHITLEY CITY, Ky. (WTVQ) – After a week on the run, an escaped inmate was captured Tuesday in McCreary County, according to officials.

Joshua New, who is a native of McCreary County, escaped from a tree trimming work release detail along KY 7 in Perry County near the Letcher County line October 16, 2018, according to the Leslie County jailer.

Investigators say New asked to use the bathroom and ran off.  During his week of freedom, New was spotted several times and some people told authorities he offered them thousands of dollars to drive him to his home.

New was being held in the Leslie County Detention Center on drug charges at the time of his escape.  The jailer says New only had a month left to serve when he escaped.

After his capture Tuesday, New was transported back to the Leslie County Detention Center.
