UPDATE: Driver who collided with fire truck dies
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A driver who police say crossed over a raised concrete median and collided with a Lexington fire truck on Man O War Boulevard Monday afternoon died from his injuries, according to the Fayette County coroner. The victim was identified as 23-year old Cody A. Emery.
The Lexington Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is trying to determine why Emery crossed over the median into oncoming traffic on Man O War near Nichols Park Drive. Investigators say Emery turned in front of the fire truck that was responding to a 911 call with its emergency lights and siren on, according to the coroner.
The fire truck collided with the passenger side of Emery’s car. Emery was rushed to the hospital where he died about 50-minutes after the accident. The firefighter who was driving the fire engine had to be extricated from the truck. He suffered minor injuries, according to investigators.
The coroner says Emery died of multiple blunt force trauma. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday at the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort.
A stretch of the inner loop of Man O War Boulevard was closed for about five-and-a-half hours from Nicholasville Road to Nichols Park Drive while the scene was cleared and the collision investigated by the CRU.
