UPDATE: More details released on murder of Pikeville officer

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police are releasing more information on the shooting death of a Pikeville police officer Tuesday night.

Troopers say Scotty Hamilton and Trooper Matt Martin were patroling around Hurricane Creek when they spotted a suspicious vehicle in the area.

State Police say both spoke to the people in the car then did a search around a nearby home.

While looking around the area, troopers say Hamilton and Martin were separated.

Gunshots were fired a short time later near the home.

State Police say Martin found Hamilton, who was suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.

Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.

No suspects have been arrested.
