UPDATE: Berea City Council Rejects Fairness Ordinance
The proposal was defeated Tuesday night by a 5 to 3 vote.
It would have prohibited discrimination against gay, lesbian and transgender people in employment, housing, and public accommodation.
One councilwoman who opposed the ordinance said that it would have caused expensive legal battles and that she questioned the need for "another protected class."
At the time of the vote, seven other Kentucky cities had already adopted similar fairness ordinances.
