UK student shot and killed near campus

LEXINGTON, Ky.(WTVQ) – Police say a University of Kentucky student was shot and killed Friday morning in Lexington.

The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. off of East Maxwell and Transylvania Park.

Police tell us the victim, a man in his early 20’s, was walking with a friend when they were confronted by the suspects.

Police are not sure how many suspects were involved. Both victims tried to run from the scene. They say one managed to get away but the other was shot several times.

Police say they received several calls about shots fired and a person down.

They say they were on the scene almost immediately and found the student lying in the street.

He was rushed to the University of Kentucky hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the victim’s friend was not injured.

Police also tell us they located a maroon mini-van off Versailles Road shortly after the shooting. Around the same time, a tow truck driver reported finding a gun in the middle of the street.

Police are not yet sure if the mini-van or the gun are tied to the shooting.

They are also still searching for the suspects.

The University of Kentucky issued a campus-wide alert following the shooting.

That was cancelled at around 3:45 a.m.
