UK football chief of staff charged with assaulting his wife

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The chief of staff for University of Kentucky football was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault over the weekend following a physical altercation with his wife, according to the Lexington Police arrest citation.

The arrest citation says 50-year old Dan Berezowitz was arrested and charged late Sunday night.  The arrest citation says he was seen on video in a loud verbal altercation with his wife.  The citation says he aggressively approached his wife, shoved her into their vehicle’s front driver side door at which time you can hear her saying, “you hurt my back.”

The arrest citation says Berezowitz’s wife appeared to strike back at him in self-defense.  The arrest citation says he grabbed his wife by her arm, twisted it, which resulted in her falling to the ground.

The arrest citation says Berezowitz and his wife were both uncooperative with police.

A report in the Lexington Herald-Leader says during Berezowitz’s court appearance in Fayette District Court on Monday, bond was set at $1,000, which was posted by UK’s director of player personnel, Chase Heuke.

A spokesperson for UK Athletics told ABC 36 News the program is aware of the reported incident and is in the process of gathering information.

According to the UK Athletics website, Berezowitz has been part of Mark Stoops’ staff since Stoops was hired as head football coach at UK in 2013.

Berezowitz began as director of recruiting operations.  He was promoted to Mark Stoops’ chief of staff in 2018.  According to UK’s public records, his annual salary is $195,840.

Berezowitz is the second member of the UK football staff to be criminally charged this off-season.  In May, wide receivers coach Jovon Bouknight was arrested and charged with DUI in northern Kentucky, leading to his suspension without pay by the school.
