UK alum honors her cousin, fallen Officer Daniel Ellis, with song

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – “A song can never be unwritten — it’s sort of an immortalizing thing,” says Hannah Ellis, a 2012 graduate from UK and cousin to Officer Daniel Ellis.

Hannah, a musician living in Nashville, knew she wanted to honor her cousin, who was killed in the line of duty and while investigating a robbery. Working with co-writers Steven Dale Jones and Justin Ebach, Hannah penned “Officer Down,” written from the perspective of Officer Ellis’ wife, Katie Ellis.

“Every time I sing this song I see my family and what we went through together.”

This Sunday, flags will be flown at half-staff around the country, honoring thousands of fallen police officers on Peace Officers Memorial Day — including Officer Ellis.  In Washington D.C., Hannah will sing her song at a special performance around 11:00 a.m.

“I wanted it to be true,” Hannah said. “And I think it’s true to me and a lot of people who have experienced something similar.”

The song “Officer Down” is now available on iTunes.
