Two-year-old dies in Laurel County house fire.

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — The Laurel County Sheriff’s office confirmed that a house fire on Wednesday resulted in the death of a toddler.

Two-year-old Josiah Vickers passed away at the scene, says the Laurel County coroner’s office. He was found by the London Fire Department in the back bedroom of the burnt house.

This tragic death happened despite the best efforts of people from the nearby lumber yard, who witnesses say were physically tearing through the siding and wall of the burning house, in an attempt to reach the child.

The Sheriff’s office says neighbors and people driving by had grabbed hoses as soon as they realized what was going on, doing their best to quench the flames in the time it took for the fire department to arrive.

Deputies say other children and adults, likely eight from two families, who were in the the house were able to escape.  They were taken to nearby hospitals for smoke inhalation and shock.  Deputies say two were flown to the University of Kentucky Hospital.

Officials say the fire started in a mobile home in the 4800 block of North Laurel Road.  They currently do not know what started the fire.

Deputies, firefighters and state troopers will continue investigating the cause of this deadly fire.
