UPDATE: House arrest for two UK students charged in kidnapping, assault
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Two UK students, accused of beating a person they held hostage and then robbing him, appeared in court Thursday.
The lawyer for 21-year-old Zachary Costin spoke to ABC 36, saying his client is under house arrest. Costin reportedly can still attend UK classes, but can’t work or go anywhere else. Costin’s lawyer added that his client would be quitting his job at the fraternity house. Costin will stay outside of Louisville at his mother’s home. At the time of the interview, Costin was still in jail, being held on a $5,000 dollar bond. His lawyer told ABC 36 that the bond would be paid today.
20-year-old Ethan Hatfield, also accused in the case, is already out of custody. Hatfield was taking a semester away from UK after breaking his leg. He will also be on house arrest, and will stay at his home in Louisville.
Neither Costin nor Hatfield is allowed to have any contact with the male victim they allegedly beat with a gun and a hammer, while threatening him with death.
Court documents say the victim was held hostage for two hours, stripped naked, and then allowed to leave. Documents also say Costin and Hatfield took the victim’s wallet, iPhone, and clothing.
Costin and Hatfield are scheduled back in court on March 24th at 8:30 a.m.
