Two-time cancer survivor celebrates anniversary as original Walmart employee

PARIS, Ky. (WTVQ)- The Walmart in Paris, KY turned 35 years old Thursday, and one of the associates has been there from the start.

Associate Sharon Davidson was hired on February 28, 1983. “I was a part of the store set up team,” she said. Applying for the job is much different now than it was then. “Back then, we had to interview at the local public library. It was a different time!”

Over time, the store has become family to Davidson, and that family has helped her through some tough times. “I’ve had cancer twice, and have been in remission for 7 years,” she said. “Walmart was very good to work with me during both times.” Sharon had surgery when she initially had cancer, but decided to work during treatment after being diagnosed for the second time in 1995. “There wasn’t anyone at home during the day, so I didn’t just want to sit around. Everyone was at work, and that’s what I wanted to be doing.”

Store manager Jamie Skidmore is her biggest fan, “She’s so great. She’s been through so much and works so hard. She’s definitely part of the glue that really makes us a family.” And what a family. They have 64 associates that have been there for over a decade!

Sharon and her co-workers celebrated their 35 year anniversary today at the store, located at 305 Letton Drive in Paris. Sharon served cake to customers, and her fellow associates.
