Two rescued from flooded Lexington road as officials warn drivers
Fire crews urge caution after Bowman Mill Road rescue
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — According to the Lexington Fire Department (LFD) two people are safe after being rescued from their cars Thursday morning when they became stuck in floodwaters on Bowman Mill Road, officials say one one was injured.
A creek overflowed due to heavy rainfall, turning into fast-moving water that covered the road. LFD says they responded just before 8 a.m. to assist the stranded individuals.
“We responded, found them stuck on the side of the road, we had crews walk out to meet them, we assisted them over a fence into a pasture field and we were able to walk them out through there so we didn’t have to take them through the water,” said Nathan Settles with the Lexington Fire Department.
Officials say the incident serves as a reminder for drivers to avoid flooded roads.
“When we have these high water events, the safest thing to do is stay out of the water, don’t cross it, just turn around and be safe,” Settles said.
AAA experts echoed the warning, emphasizing the dangers of driving through standing water.
“We always say ‘turn around, don’t drown,'” said Lori Weaver Hawkins with AAA Bluegrass. “It only takes six inches to make you lose control, possibly of your vehicle. But that kind of standing water can also hide potholes, debris from storms, and even downed wires,” said Hawkins.
Experts also advise checking tire tread and ensuring windshield wipers are in good condition before driving in wet conditions.
