Two involved in money laundering in Lexington going to prison
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Chinese national and the wife of a convicted drug dealer have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in an elaborate money-laundering scheme in Lexington.
Prosecutors say 41-year old Fengqiang Zhang was sentenced to four-years in prison for laundering drug money with Nancy Garcia Zapata. She was sentenced to just shy of six-years in prison.
She’s married to Fernando Lara Salas. He was convicted of drug trafficking, firearms and immigration offenses and was sentenced to nearly 30-years in prison last year, according to prosecutors.
The investigation by Lexington Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) that began in 2016, led to the seizure of large amounts of drug money from Zhang and Zapata and resulted in Salas’ conviction.
Zhang faces deportation to China, according to prosecutors.
