Two Boone National Forest roads to be closed for winter

MOREHEAD, Ky. (WTVQ) – The USDA Forest Service will close Chimney Top Road (FSR 10) and Rock Bridge Road (FSR 24) on the Cumberland Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest to all motorized vehicles for the winter season.

The gates at the intersection of Highway 715 will be closed by close of business on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. The roads will remain open to foot and bicycle traffic, but all vehicles must park in designated, paved parking areas along Highway 715.

Vehicles are not allowed to park in front of the closed gates.

Winter closure of these roads protects the surface from damage during periods of freezing, thawing, and saturation. Proactive closures now will ensure decent road conditions come spring. Road closures also help to protect sensitive wildlife and plant species.

Future management of these road systems is being examined as part of the ongoing Red River Gorge management planning effort.

Additional information on this effort can be located on the Daniel Boone National Forest website or on the Future of the Red: Management in the Red River Gorge Facebook page.

For information on the Red River Gorge during winter months, please call (Thursday-Sunday) the Gladie Visitor Center at (859) 488-1413 or the Cumberland Ranger Station at (606) 776-5456.
