Truck driver killed in fiery crash in Marshall County

CALVERT CITY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A truck driver was killed Wednesday morning in a fiery crash on I-24 in Marshall County, according to Kentucky State Police.

Investigators say shortly after 11 a.m., 63-year old Gary Johnson, of St. Francisville, Louisiana, was driving a 2019 Peterbilt tractor-trailer west on I-24 near the 28 mile marker when he hit an abandoned vehicle on the right side of the road.

KSP says Johnson swerved into the left lane, which caused a 2015 Kenworth tractor-trailer to go off the road into the median. Johnson’s semi went into the median and partially into the eastbound lanes where it overturned and caught fire, according to KSP.  Johnson died at the scene.

The other tractor-trailer crossed the eastbound lanes of traffic and collided with a tree line on the south side of the road, according to investigators.

KSP says a 2011 Ford Fiesta, traveling east on I-24, collided with both tractor-trailers.  No one else was hurt, according to State Police.

The deadly crash is being investigated by KSP Trooper Mike Ray.
