RICHMOND, Ky (WTVQ)- Thanksgiving will be here Thursday and travelers on the road might be seeing some congestion.

There are many people driving to get to their Thanksgiving destination.

According to AAA around 49 million Americans are expected to drive.

I spoke with some travelers about how the roads have been today, since today is the busiest travel day for thanksgiving for drivers.

Katie Ernst and her husband are traveling over 16 hours to their Thanksgiving destination. She says the roads on Wednesday, have not been too bad.

“We’re headed to Columbia, South Carolina to spend Thanksgiving with our daughter who’s in college there. Very congested, especially around the cities. Lots of slow going but no stop and start. I mean we were going just below the speed limit so i think that’s pretty decent on a traffic day,” says Ernst.

Mat Frump and his family are traveling from Cincinnati to Pigeon Forge. He says traffic has been pretty smooth so far, but he’s not too sure about traffic coming back.

“It hasnt been bad so far, pretty smooth,” says Frump.

“Yeah, that’s a little nerve wracking, but we’re hoping Saturday is not too bad. ”

Lori Weaver Hawinks, with AAA spoke about what drivers can expect Wednesday on the road and warns those driving to be cautious.

“We’re looking at some very congested roads and then if you add into the mix that there are more distractions for drivers when they take these trips. That’s the first thing i tell people make sure that you’re not distracted when you’re traveling. There are extra people in the car, there’s a lot of traffic around you and your mind is probably on that thanksgiving dinner. But you need to stay focused on the road so that everyone makes it to the table safely the next day,” says Hawkins.

AAA says the next busiest travel day by car is Sunday, when returning home.
