Transylvania University students help shooting victim

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – One person is in the hospital after being shot Thursday morning off North Broadway in Lexington, according to police.

Officials say he was taken to UK Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say they believe the suspect and victim know each other.

A Transylvania student who lives on North Broadway says he and another student helped the shooting victim before officers arrived on scene.

Chris Moore told ABC 36 he heard five or six gunshots Thursday morning before seeing the victim running down North Broadway, trying to flag down cars before collapsing in the road.

Moore says he and another Transylvania student worked together to stop traffic and carry the victim off the street, then called both Lexington and Transylvania campus police.

According to Moore, the victim was shot in the calf, so he says they wrapped his leg in a towel until police and medics arrived.

Moore says he just applied to medical school and wants to do emergency room work, so he says when he saw the victim needed help, he knew he had to do whatever he could.

“I’m not gonna just sit there and watch a guy collapse in the middle of one of the busiest roads in Lexington and not do anything,” said Moore. “It’s one of those things, yeah it might be a little dangerous. People hear gunshots and want to stay inside, but the guy was out here… I didn’t know if he was shot in the torso or if he was going to die, so I just wanted to come out and help.”

Moore says this isn’t the first time that he’s heard gunshots near his apartment, but says they are usually farther away.

“It was definitely different this time because it was so close,” said Moore. “Usually we hear they’re a couple streets over. Definitely makes you nervous.”

Moore says he is just glad that Thursday’s shooting was not deadly.

Police say they are still searching for the suspect in the shooting.
