Tracking severe weather for our Wednesday

Meteorologist Jordan Smith has your Saturday evening ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

Lexington, Kentucky (WTVQ – ABC 36): Good Saturday evening everyone, today has felt and looked like winter with temperatures stuck in the 30s and scattered snow showers/flurries. But today was a quick shot of winter because we bounce back to above average for our Sunday. After a cold start, a pretty awesome day is in store across central and eastern Kentucky on Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 50s under plenty of sunshine.

Slot1

Monday doesn’t start nearly as cold with low to mid 40s to begin the day.

Slot0

By the afternoon we have an absolute WINNER of a day with temperatures hitting the mid to upper 60s under plenty of sunshine. Some areas may even tickle 70 degrees.

Slot1

Scattered showers and storms move in early on Tuesday and will be possible through out the day but it is not a washout, highs will be back into the upper 60s to near 70 outside of storms.

Slot0

Now that brings us to Wednesday when we have an increasing chance at seeing strong to severe storms. The SPC (Storm Prediction Center) continues to highlight our area and points to the south and southwest with the greatest severe potential.

Slot2

Timing means everything with this system. The earlier in the day we get the storms in here the lesser of the chance for the storms to be severe because the atmosphere won’t have as long to heat up. The later in the day we get the storms in here, the better the chance at seeing a decent severe weather event. As of now, it looks like the line of storms moves in late morning into early afternoon which would pose a severe threat.

Slot3

Winds are going to be strong with this system and we may see gust 40mph+ even without storms.

Slot3

Regardless, temperatures tank behind the storms we drop 20-30 degrees in just a few hours to give us some snow showers by Wednesday evening.

Slot0

So to re-cap, we look to go from mid 60s and severe storms to mid 30s and snow showers within just a 3-4 hour period. WOW! Temperatures by Thursday morning drop into the 20s.

Make sure you stay up to date with the ABC 36 Storm Team on-air and online the next few days leading up to this potential severe weather event. #kywx
