Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League celebrating 10 years

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) –  In 2006, the Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League (TBML) was founded with the support of community volunteers and corporations like Toyota and the Rotary Club of Lexington. Now, the League is celebrating ten years of operation, with the 2016 opening day slated for April 9.

The TBML removes barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime. Since the primary challenges arise from the natural grass fields used in conventional leagues, TBML teams play on a custom-designed, rubberized turf field that accommodates wheelchairs and other assertive devices while helping to prevent injuries.

“It’s been a joy to see so many amazing athletes along with their families experience the magic of the Miracle League over the years” said Chris DeHoag with AXA Advisors, LLC and TBML board chair. “Each player gets to enjoy his or her own ‘field of dreams’ thanks to this opportunity” he added.

Each Saturday during the spring and fall, children ages 5-19 participate in baseball at its finest in a league where everyone is a winner. The league has evolved to include adults who play on Tuesdays during the spring and fall as well.

Because of the uniqueness of the program, players travel from all over the state to be a part of this special league.

Today, each league serves hundreds of athletes, not only providing them an outlet for their athletic endeavors, but opportunities for camaraderie, sportsmanship and friendship as well. “Seeing so many members of our community, of all ages and walks of life come out to serve as coaches, announcers, mentors and ‘buddies’ for the common goal of bringing happiness into the lives of these children is truly humbling” said Rebecca Barnes, director of community relations for the Lexington Legends and TBML board member.
