Too Much Water Pressure Making Hustonville’s Pipes Burst
The mayor said while the city’s water tank is worked on, it’s using water from Moreland but that water has more pressure than Hustonville’s pipes are used to.
“First break happened Wednesday morning,” said David Payton, mayor of the city of Hustonville’s. “We had another break about eight feet from the first break.”
Mayor Payton said some of the pipes are more than 70-years-old and he describes them as antiques.
Problems started Tuesday when the city needed to work on its water tank. Payton said it had been 23 years since the tank had been drained and cleaned.
The tank was also being painted and a mixer was being installed. He said the tank had to be drained and dried in order for the work to be done.
The city is getting water from Moreland while the tank is empty but Payton said that water has about 15-19 pounds more pressure per square inch than what the pipes are use to.
“That small increase is finding weak spots in the old cast iron system,” said Payton.
Since Wednesday, three water mains have broken.
The city is under a boil water advisory for all cooking and drinking water.
About 350 customers are affected according to the mayor.
“So I just go out and buy the bottled water it’s a lot easier and you don’t have to worry about boiling the stuff,” said David Sandeen who doesn’t like to boil the water.
He said he’s paying about four dollar per case of water, that could start to add up since the mayor said Hustonville’s water tank is going to be down for about a month.
“I expect in the next month we’re going to have a few more leaks,” said mayor Payton.
He’s hoping this boil water advisory only lasts a few more days.
“Samples will be turned into the lab Monday morning and I believe Monday afternoon we’ll be able to lift the boil water advisory,” said Payton.
He said this pipe problem has jumped to the top of the city’s list of things to fix.
He said at the next monthly council meeting he plans to talk about installing new valves on the city’s pipes so if another water main breaks, the city can shut off water to a single street instead of all customers.
