Thousands expected to travel this weekend

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – It’s been a busy week of traveling leading up to the fourth of July with millions of Americans traveling for the holiday.

From last weekend through Sunday more than 70 million Americans are expected to travel for the 4th of July holiday. Including over 810,000 Kentuckians, either by car or by air.

“Last Thursday through Sunday we saw about 11,000 travelers depart out of Lexington, so I think we’ll definitely see those returning passengers this coming weekend,” said Lauren Simmerman, the Community Relations Manager for the Bluegrass Airport.

Simmerman says this summer is the busiest travel season the airport has ever seen.

“We knew this was coming, so we and we’ve been working with all of our partners on site to make sure that their ready to accomodate our travelers,” said Simmerman.

According to AAA, the worst traffic delays can be expected on July 7th when most travelers are expected to return home.

AAA says the best times to travel are before 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, but after 7 p.m. on Monday, July 8th.

On Saturday the worst times to travel are between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Sunday between 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and between 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday.

“So with that we’re definitely advising make sure you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before you’re flight departs,” said Simmerman.

She gave this piece of advice for those planning to fly.

“Just pack you patience and give yourself plenty of time. The last thing you want is to feel stressed trying to find a parking spot or anything like that when you’re getting ready to travel. So, give yourself plenty of time so you can enjoy the experience.”
