‘The Great Space Adventure’ at EKU

Richmond, Ky. (WTVQ) — Civil Air Patrol Cadets and community members were able to learn about all things air and space at EKU.

EKU’s department of teaching and educational leadership partnered with the department of aviation to hold ‘The Great Space Adventure.’

The event began at 10 a.m.

During the stem day, cadets and community members could learn about drones, rocketry, robotics, eclipses and experience VR flight simulations.

Attendees ranged from elementary through high school students to adults.

William Thornburgh, an assistant professor at EKU, spoke about why this kind of event is important.

“I think that we need to expose students as much as possible to stem education,” said Thornburgh. “Especially at the elementary level, the majority of the focus is on math and ELA and science does tend to take a backseat. There are students who love science and they wish they could have more experiences, so informal experiences like this really help to supplement, maybe the lack of, or they supplement to add additional content and really strengthen the interest that students have in stem. So, I think it’s very important that they’re getting this informal learning experience. It’s really great that we have cap students that are involved and doing some of the teaching and presenting.”

Thornburgh encourages people to get out and see the eclipse on March 8th, as the next total solar eclipse won’t be until 2044.

The event wrapped up at 12 p.m.
